Strategy 2: Use Placeholders

Because Big Rocks are deadline-oriented and project-based, they aren’t as steadfast as Boulders. They can change often. So instead of creating time blocks for ultra-specific Big Rock activities, consider creating Big Rock placeholders.

A past time management coaching client uses Big Rock placeholders in her Ideal Week to represent her three Big Rock projects at work. Project A has time blocks on Monday morning and afternoon. Project B has time blocks on Tuesday and Wednesday. Project C has a weekly time block on Thursdays. What she does during those time blocks changes from week to week based on the status of the project, but the placeholders remain steadfast. This enables her to carve out time every week to make progress on all three of her projects, instead of spending too much time on a single project and unintentionally neglecting the rest.

Similar to using placeholders for Big Rock projects, you can also create placeholders in your day for different types of work. For example, you could dedicate time blocks in the morning to work that requires more focus, such as writing or analytical decision-making. Then, you could dedicate time blocks in the afternoon to more low-impact work.
